Does Mobile Phone Cause Brain Cancer?

Jeetendra Prakash Murdan

Most people in developed countries use mobile phones. It has become a necessity. What most of the world does not know is that mobile phones cause brain cancer. Out of every 1000 people using mobiles 4 out of them end up with brain cancer. This figure is likely to rise from 4 to 6 if there is no sensitization campaign.
Mobile phones emit microwaves. The intensity of microwaves is highest at the moment a call is being initiated. Even when not using a mobile phone it still emit microwaves. As such if the phone is in someone’s pocket it may cause diseases associated to the organs in direct contact with the phone. If someone goes to bed with a mobile phone under her pillow the brain is exposed to microwaves for nearly 7 hours.
But studies have revealed that brain tumours occur only after 10 years of excessive use of mobile phones. As such if the newer generations start using mobiles at the age of 13 it is likely that a good proportions of the population may be diagnosed for brain tumours at the age of 23 and they may die by the age of 26.
Most vulnerable of all are children as their brains are still developing , and are more receptive to microwaves. Children skulls are thinner than those of adults. If children use mobiles for hours they should develop brain tumours in their adolescence. Some phones designed for children have been removed from the market on ethical grounds. There is much publicity that encourage children to ask for mobile phones from their parents. Cartoons depicting use of mobile phones  aim at building a market for mobile phones amongst the children.
More vulnerable than children is the feotus – the unborn child. Pregnant women using mobiles or keeping the mobile in their pocket put the feotus to risk of developing cancer. Prepnant women know they should not consume alcohol or cigarettes. Now they should add mobiles in the list. Not only mobile phones emit microwaves. Laptops also emit microwaves. So if a pregnant lady is using her mobile with her laptop in her laps, there is constructive interference of the radiation from these two sources and the resulting intensity is the product of these two.
Microwaves are also found in microwave ovens. Microwaves have a heating effect. As such when using mobile phones the microwave heats up the brain. If used for hours at a stretch it is likely to soon cause brain tumour which may or may not trigger into a brain cancer depending on remedial action taken. Some brands of mobile phones emit stronger radiation than others. Users can use a radiation detector sold on the market to determine if the intensity of radiation is at safe levels.
Microwaves apart from being emitted by mobile phones and microwave ovens are also emitted by computers, televisions, electric cables , cars and any other electric equipment. The intensity of the radiation decreases as square of the distance. As such it we keep a short distance away from an equipment we are safe. Only equipment and cables in direct contact with the body are very dangerous.
Use of Bluetooth is more dangerous than  using the mobile alone because the bluetooth  receive signals from all nearby equipments and focus it right inside the ear and is likely to cause ear cancer. Also the user is likely to keep the Bluetooth in her ear all the time.  But use of earphone is safe as it keeps the mobile far from the brain. Users should be encouraged to use sms, to use speaker mode and to use landlines.
The reason why most people are ignorant of the dangers of mobile phones is that mobile phone companies are billion dollar companies that control the economy, the media, televisions, radios and magazines.  So all information against their favour are censored. Strong people arguing against them are soon brought to silence.

  1. Very informative but quite disturbing and frightening article mainly because we all use mobile phones quite frequently without having ever thought that it might irreversibly affect our health.

There seems to be two schools of thoughts: on one hand, it is believed that long-term and frequent use of cell phones receive and emit radio frequency that may be associated with an increased risk of brain tumors, while on the other hand, people argue that there is no conclusive evidence so far.

However, since it is our health which is at stake, we cannot rule out the possibility of risk, and it suggests reasons enough to be cautious with the use of cell phones.

Social networking sites including blogs serve the purpose of informing us and attracting out attention on important issues that we often take for granted. I am not suggesting that mobile phones do cause brain cancer, what I am in fact referring to is that when writing such an article on a blog, the writer has a certain degree of personal responsibility because he is not merely stating his views; he is giving an informative article. Such blog articles not only raise awareness but they also encourage reflection and further discussion, research and collaboratively finding and adopting means of minimizing the effects of mobile phones on the brain, if effects there are!

  2. Thank you Reena for your comment. The reason why people say it is not conclusive that mobile phones cause brain cancer is that mobile phone companies are billion dollar companies that finance research of which the outcome is that mobile phones are safe. Researchers in favour of mobile phones are apt to get promoted and receive bigger projects to lead.
There is a long list of research papers that condemn mobile phones. Please refer to the literature in case of doubt.

  3. This is perhaps the most controversial scientific question of the last ten years. Does mobile phone use cause cancer? You would reckon with all the research studies performed on this topic in the last decade this question has long been answered but the answer is not a simple “yes” or “no.”

Let’s take a look at the two sides of the coin.

THOSE WHO SAY NO: The majority of articles published during the last decade report that no association was observed between mobile phone use and increased cancer risk and as a result several organizations say that there is no sufficient scientific evidence to prove that prolonged radiation exposure from mobile phones can cause cancer. The US National Cancer Institute says the majority of studies conducted on this subject do not show any association between mobile phone use and cancer. Also the World Health Organization (WHO) says that current scientific evidence indicates that exposure to radiation fields, such as those emitted by mobile phones and their base stations, is unlikely to induce or promote cancers.

THOSE WHO SAY YES: Many consumer groups are wary of the results of the INTERPHONE studies because of the phone industry’s strong role in the funding. Anyway I’ll quote one of the articles I’ve read on the net which support your discussion theme. It’s about a managing director at a top Wall Street firm who was diagnosed with a brain tumor five years ago. He explained that the tumor was located just behind his right ear and was not immediately fatal—the five-year survival rate is about 70 percent. He was 35 years old at the time of his diagnosis and immediately suspected it was the result of his intense cell-phone usage. "Not for nothing," he said, "but in investment banking we've been using cell phones since 1992, back when they were the Gordon-Gekko-on-the-beach kind of phone." When we asked his neurosurgeon, who was on the staff of a major medical center in Manhattan, about the possibility of a cell-phone-induced tumor, the doctor responded that in fact he was seeing more and more of such cases—young, relatively healthy businessmen who had long used their phones obsessively. He said he believed the industry had discredited studies showing there is a risk from cell phones.

Let’s hope that science comes up with the answer soon. In the meantime, it’s up to us to make the decisions concerning mobile phone use for ourselves and our families.

  4. It can be said that nowadays everyone uses a mobile. Even beggars communicate through mobile phones. This little gadget connects the whole world. We can store songs, watch TV, send and receive messages, phone, chat, take photos, use internet among others. It,s a good medium of social networking. It’s true that no one has ever talked about its side effects. After reading this article am really shocked to know how it is killing ourselves bit by bit. But the big question is can today’s generation think of a single minute without a mobile phone?

  5. It is true indeed that big companies will try to hide these information because mobiles phones is bringing a high turnover. However, if this is detrimental to people's health, it is important to make them know about the dangers.

I agree with vishal that it is really very difficult to make everyone change their mind regarding the use of mobile phones. This will take some time to get them sensitized and aware of the real danger.

However this not impossible. With social networking,we can get things done. Most of the connection is hidden in social networks. Its limited to people and connections we can see.
But Social networking sites such as blogs help us see connection that are hidden in the world. And blogs can be very effective to create an awareness about these issues.
